People of Yellowstone

Hardcover book, published 2017

My most extensive single project to date, People of Yellowstone, was inspired by the many visits I made over a twenty-five year period to visit my brother, Jim Horan – one of those people who came to the Yellowstone area for a visit and never left. Through him I had the privilege of meeting many others whose  reasons for coming and staying I found intriguing. While the striking natural beauty of the park has been the subject of countless photographs and documents, I was struck by the remarkable people who, like Jim, had gravitated and been held there.

With the support of a Turner Foundation Grant, I spent five years crisscrossing the three states that border on the Park to create a series of collaborative portraits of people from the Yellowstone National Park community. The individuals determined  where would be photographed - settings that said something to them and revealed something about them. And many of the locations were challenging: high up on mountains, into derelict buildings, across streams and rivers, and by wolf dens.

The large format book was published in 2017 and continues to be very well received.  It features eight-seven portraits accompanied by interviews with the subjects by author Ruth Crocker.

Twenty-three of these portraits are now in the permanent collection of the Yellowstone Gateway Museum in Livingston, Montana.
